According to Reuters and ANN, New Line Cinema has obtained the rights to the Manga ‘Monster‘ by Naoki Urasawa:
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - New Line Cinema has acquired feature film rights to “Monster,” a best-selling Japanese manga comic book series from author Naoki Urasawa.
“Monster” is a psychological thriller that tells the story of a young doctor who saves the life of a little boy only to find out a few years later that the life he saved was that of a brilliant killer. The doctor must then track down the young killer and solve a larger conspiracy.
Urasawa is regarded as a master of the distinctive manga comics style that originated in Japan, where “Monster” has been adapted into an animated television series and has spawned 18 volumes as a manga series.
The “Monster” mangas have sold more than 25 million copies in Japan, and it has a strong following in Asia and Europe.
The book’s publisher, Shogakukan Inc., is executive producing the project. Shogakukan also was behind the “Pokemon” series.
I wonder how much emphasis will be put on the ‘executive producing by Shogakukan’ part. Whilst I would love to see Manga translated to the big screen (well it combines two loves, films and Manga) I’m hugely sceptical of just how well this would translate.
Really though it’s all hypothetical at the moment considering I’ve not read the Manga. As far as I know this particular title could be the world’s most straight forward movie adaptation but I’d still be sceptical even then.
I suppose when you consider that we can still get conversion issues even now on how Manga should be presented in its written form, be it either censorship or textual re-writes; it’s doubtful that we wouldn’t encounter the same such things when brought to film.
As it’s still early news yet, as in we don’t know if it’s even live action (though I’m guessing it is) or animated, I don’t really want to say much more. But if this is going to be a live action film, I hope this doesn’t start a Hollywood trend, much like is happening with comics to try and re-do the entire catalogue of Manga titles as films, it just wont work.
